Internship Opportunities
Run for Congo Women is seeking an intern to assist Lisa Shannon, founder of Run for Congo Women, as well as coordinating the September, 2008 - Run for Congo Women in Portland, OR. This is an unpaid, six month position; 10-15 hours a week from May-August then full-time for the first three weeks of September.
Run for Congo Women was started in 2005 by Portland Oregon's Lisa Shannon in hopes of raising awareness about the situation facing women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She raised enough money to support 80 women by running 30 miles through the woods of Forest Park. Since then, she and other individuals have organized dozens of runs throughout the country, raising more than $250,000 and supporting hundreds of women in the DRC. Run for Congo Women has been featured in The Oprah Magazine, Fitness Magazine and Lisa has been honored as one of Runner's World 2006 Heroes of Running. We expect the continuous growth of the Run for Congo Women.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Receive and respond to questions regarding runs, registrations and requests for materials
- Coordinating meetings with volunteers
- Maintain correspondence with Congolese Sisters
- Manage other online tools to raise awareness and increase participation
- Track local media coverage
Qualifications:
- Experience working or volunteering in an office environment (preferably in a non-profit setting)
- Should be detail-oriented and able to forecast what will be needed for the event
- Must be highly organized
- Strong e-mail and phone communication
- Interest in international women's issues
- Demonstrated creativity and flexibility
- Experience and/or comfort with word processing, merge letters and databases, preferably Microsoft Word and Excel using MAC platform
- Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Willingness to learn new things
- Ability to work well with others
